B U S H N E L L F A M I L Y GENEALOGY - Compiled and written by George Eleazer Bushnell 1945: *372. Abraham, b. Saybrook, Conn. 27 Dec. 1744, d. Starksboro, Vt. 24 Sept. 1824, m. Canaan, Conn. 9 Jan. 1770, Mary (Molly) Ensign, bapt. W. Hartland, Conn. 7 July 1751, d. Starksboro, Vt. 19 Nov. 1832, dau. of John (said to have been a Capt. in Rev. War), and Mary (Sedgwick) Ensign. Abraham Bushnell married at Canaan, Conn. and may have been in Lebanon for a time, but resided until 1794 in Canaan when he removed to Starksboro, Vt. where both died. No record of War service has been found, but it is probable that he served for a time, as in the collection of war relics of Gen. R. W. Judson of Ogdensburg, N.Y. there is a powder horn carved with the numerous designs among which is a plan of the fort at Peekskill, and the inscription "Peekskill, N.Y. May ye 14 A.D. 1777, Abraham Bushnell's Horn, Freedom or Death." N.E.Hist. & Gen. Reg.) While at Canaan Falls he had a carding mill, which is said to have been the first of its kind in the state, and here all of his children were born except his youngest son. The 1790 census Bushnell Gene. 195. Sixth Generation. 372-812 2 males over 16, 4 males under, and 6 females. In 1794 tile entire family removed to Starksboro, where at the first town meeting abt. 1796 he was chosen as a Selectman. She is said to have been less than 5 feet tall, with a slight form, perfectly erect, elastic step, and black eyes, and a very decided Methodist. After their log house was built, she instituted regular Sunday services, calling on various young men to read the service and offer the prayers as her husband was quite modest. One young man in whom she took a special interest was induced to think seriously of making the Christian ministry his life's work, and his decision led to the making of the public career of the renowned Bishop Hedding, of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
